CHAPTER ONE: CHANGES

Jaystar's P.O.V

The sun is dipping between the reeds outside of camp. I silently beg the fiery light not to go, but 

I know it's useless. The sun won't bring Shellclaw back. I swallow to hide my grief. My clanmates 

don't need another reminder. I take a deep breath. I still wince when i move my torso. I'll have to 

have a word with Swiftwing later. Right now, though, I have a ceremony to attend to. I pad 

outside the little cave and on to the smooth rock in the front of the RiverClan camp. I allow myself 

a moment of pride. It was my Clan that built the beautiful reed dens adorned with cockle shells. 

It was my Clan that made the entrance so hidden from our rivals. It was my Clan that caught the 

many fish in the middle of camp. RiverClan will prevail. I thought to myself, raising my head. 

My Clanmates were waiting. I headed towards The Point. The Point was a leaning piece 

of driftwood that I used for Clan Meetings. ''Let all cats old enough to swim gather at

 The Point for a Clan Meeting!'' My voice rang throughout the clearing, and soon cats were 

swarming towards me. When they had settled down, I announced. ''It has been a full day since 

our loyal deputy, Shellclaw, has gone to hunt with our ancestors.'' I paused to let a few mournful 

cries be heard. I looked solemly at Blacktail and Mapleheart, who were Shellclaw's parents. Their 

heads were lowered in grief. I continued with; ''But the time of mourning is over, and a new 

deputy must be named.'' I stopped and examined the faces of the cats before me. The truth is, I 

haven't decided who the new deputy will be. But now I must choose. I go through my clanmates 

in my mind. Juniperfeather, who is loyal to me above all else. But she is too clingy. Roseshade, 

the beautiful yet fiesty she-cat. No, not clingy enough. Rockpath would soon join the elders, and 

Silverfox and Icestorm had not yet been given apprentices. I looked around the clearing; the 

warriors and apprentices were bunched together in front of The Point, Swiftwing and Sunstripe sat 

near their den, the elders shared tongues beneath the reeds and the queens hushed their young. 

Jaystar let out a sigh, Why must it be so hard to lead my Clan? 

Suddenly, an idea popped into the gray tom's head. He swallowed and belted out, 

''Blossompelt will be the new deputy of RiverClan.
